The Midnight Root is a 19th-century French side table defined by attenuated proportions, material contrast, and a visible record of use. Constructed in figured burl wood and topped with a black marble slab, the piece balances vertical lightness with material weight.
The table stands on slender cabriole legs that taper delicately to the floor, lending the form a lifted, almost architectural presence. A shaped apron and restrained carved detailing reference French decorative furniture of the period, where ornament was secondary to line and proportion. Ormolu-style mounts remain in place at the corners and legs, providing structural punctuation rather than decoration.
Three drawers are set discreetly into the apron. The black marble top shows historic wear and a stabilized crack, consistent with long use and careful preservation.
The burl wood veneer displays dense, irregular figuring across the body of the table, creating tonal variation that shifts with light. The surface has been restored using traditional French polishing techniques with shellac, enhancing clarity while maintaining the integrity of the original material.
The Midnight Root is suited for use as a bedside table, occasional table, or quiet accent within a layered interior. Its scale allows it to recede or assert itself depending on placement.
This is an original antique, singular in condition and form. Form is preserved. History is allowed to remain. Its wear is cumulative rather than decorative, and its presence is defined by restraint, continuity, and material honesty.
Available through private acquisition.
