17 ⅝ W × 14 ⅝ D × 39 ⅜ H in
A late 19th-century French walnut commode cabinet executed in the Renaissance Revival tradition, drawing from forms associated with the Henry II period. Its vertical proportion and controlled massing favor structure over applied ornament. The cabinet functions as a contained storage form within the domestic interior.
The frame is defined by fluted columns, carved floral reserves, and balanced massing. Walnut veneers are arranged in directional patterns, with bookmatched grain across the drawer fronts establishing a controlled rhythm across the façade. At the center, a concealed marble-lined chamber opens behind two false drawer fronts, a configuration consistent with commode cabinets designed for discreet use. Four graduated drawers fitted with original hardware provide storage, while the raised base and turned feet give lift to the case.
The cabinet was refinished with hand-applied shellac, preserving evidence of age while clarifying tone and surface. No structural intervention was required. The original marble top retains a stable hairline crack consistent with age. The marble-lined interior chamber shows staining consistent with use. All components remain sound and functional.
Placed in entryways, bedrooms, or private interiors where vertical storage defines position within the room.
