Crimson Canopy is a matched pair of late 19th century reclining chairs belonging to a tradition of mechanically articulated seating developed for private interiors. The form integrates a concealed reclining function within an upright chair profile, allowing movement without altering the object’s visual presence. This type of seating occupies a position between fixed seating and fully reclining furniture.
Each chair is constructed without arms, producing a vertical, uninterrupted silhouette. The carved wooden frames are articulated through continuous curvature and restrained floral relief, finished in a black ebony surface that sharpens the outline and deepens shadow across the carving. The backrests rise tall and narrow, supported by an internal spring-back mechanism that preserves the chair’s external geometry.
The frames were cleaned and refinished in a black ebony finish. The chairs were fully reupholstered. The original reclining mechanisms were retained and remain operational.
Crimson Canopy is suited to libraries, studies, and private interiors where seating supports duration without visual dominance. Offered as a pair, the chairs establish repetition and restraint, allowing form and function to register quietly within the space.
Sold exclusively as a pair.
Available through private acquisition.
