The Calder Scuttle | Restored Antique Coal Box

$880.00

A coal scuttle from a domestic tradition of hearthside storage, where fuel was kept in proximity to the point of use within the interior. The form is forward-angled, allowing access without reaching fully inside.

The body is constructed in wood with a sloped interior and a removable liner shaped to be lifted, emptied, and returned. Brass hardware reinforces the structure at points of contact, with hinges, corner brackets, and fasteners defining the exterior. A centered handle allows for movement, while a coal shovel is mounted along the back in a brass bracket, with a metal poker accompanying the piece.

The surface was refinished in black. The wood reads as a unified surface, and the brass was cleaned.

Placed beside a hearth or within an interior where fire remains part of use, the object operates through proximity and access, supporting function without interruption.
