19th-Century Italian Renaissance Revival Chairs | Sedia Tenaglia Form
Sevilla Arc (I & II) is a sculptural and historically resonant pair of 19th-century Italian Renaissance Revival chairs, crafted in the elegant sedia tenaglia form. Rooted in the design traditions of Moorish scribe seating and reinterpreted through the lens of Renaissance aesthetics, this distinctive silhouette was favored by nobility and scholars alike for its symbolism of refinement, intellect, and ceremonial grace. Produced in the mid-1800s as part of the Renaissance Revival movement, these chairs reflect a period in which Italian artisans reawakened classical forms and motifs to honor the grandeur of the past.
Each chair features a boldly intersecting X-frame composed of delicately curved wooden slats that flow from base to seat to backrest in a rhythm of sculptural continuity. The crest is intricately carved with Renaissance scrollwork, botanical flourishes, and a central roundel, a quiet emblem of status and ornamental sophistication. Restored and hand-refinished by Acanthus Home using traditional methods, the frames preserve their historic integrity while drawing out the natural tonal richness of the wood. The resulting finish is smooth, satin-rich, and warm with age, revealing the grace of time through curated clarity.
Though born of classical tradition, Sevilla Arc transitions effortlessly into the contemporary interior. The pair may be styled in a front entry, flanking a console or pedestal, or placed individually in a study, dressing room, or quiet alcove where sculptural refinement is desired. Their armless profile and visual symmetry allow for easy layering in architecturally intentional spaces.
Named for Seville, a historic crossroads of Moorish and European design, and for the arc formed by each chair’s sculpted silhouette, Sevilla Arc reflects Acanthus’s belief in restoration as both preservation and art. Sold exclusively as a pair.
